A Brief History of Bonnybridge

Let's build a timeline for Bonnybridge! Here are a few key dates to get things started...

c2500 BC - New Stone Age people are living here - pottery from this period has been found in the area. There is also a Bronze Age (c1800BC) gold bracelet found at Bonnybridge in the National Museum of Scotland.

83 AD - The Romans arrive in the area.

142 AD - The Antonine Wall is completed along with the fort at Rough Castle.

12th Century - A motte, a defensive structure, is built on land now within the grounds of Antonine Primary School.

1682 - The earliest record of the name Bonnybridge, although there are earlier mentions of Ford of Bonny, suggesting the name changed with the infrastructure.

19th Century - Prosperity comes with local industry including paper milling, sawmilling, brickworks, iron founding and distilling.

1820 - The Battle of Bonnymuir. Radicals are overcome by troops on the moor. The leaders are executed and a larger number transported.

1878 - Bonnybridge becomes an independent parish.

1990s - Bonnybridge is declared UFO Capital of Scotland by the press after a number of reported sightings in the area.

2010 - s1bonnybridge.com is launched to let residents discuss local issues, place small ads, air their opinions, advertise events and show off pictures and video.

Now it's your turn!

That's the briefest of brief summaries and it's full of gaps. But this is where you come in. There's lots of interest in local history and lots of local knowledge out there - so why not share it here?

Perhaps you'd like to start your own more detailed timeline or an article about your favourite aspect of Bonnybridge history? There must also be a wealth of wonderful photographs of Bonnybridge in years gone by - maybe even some video of more recent events - and those are more than welcome here. Remember, history doesn't need to be in black and white! It's good to bring back memories of just a few years ago, too.

Post it all here, and let's see if we can really chronicle the history of Bonnybridge in a way we can all share!

Nancy Grier says

One of the oldest foundry's in the are, Smith & Wellstood's was allowed to use the Royal name as it made fireplaces and stoves for the Royal Yatch.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
